BRIJS VELVET DITCH
Brijs’ new single ‘Velvet Ditch’ is based on the imagery of being stuck in comfort; whether that be a safe job, stale relationship, or the same small town that you grew up in because living with your parents rent free. While for some, their proverbial “velvet ditch” is a small town or village in the miscellaneous countryside, for Brijs, it was London. As the artist explains: “My velvet ditch was life in London before writing the album - I was working flat out as a salaried composer in Soho and if I wasn’t working late, I was at an industry event or party. The money was good but I was starting to feel washed out, stagnant and like I’d lost sight of why I wanted to make music.” Brijs’ salvation came via a guardianship of a dilapidated mansion called Cecil Court, in which the songwriter could find peace, time and gather up his energy to make music once again. This resulted in six singles of pop-leaning psych rock, as we hear in this sophomore release. ‘Velvet Ditch’ is a thundering juggernaut of Foals-esque drums and psychedelic strings. - Hannah Thacker
